As well as being Chief Executive of Capital Credit Union, Marlene is an Adviser on Credit Unions/Financial Inclusion to HRH Duchess of Cornwall, she is also the Chair of the Money and Pensions Service Nation of Savers Challenge Group, and represents credit unions on the HMT Financial Inclusion Policy Forum. She was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s New Year Honour’s List 2016 for her work in financial services and particularly financial inclusion.
At Capital Credit Union she currently holds SMF8 (Senior Manager) and Insurance Mediation responsibilities. Previously she was a Board member of the World Council of Credit Unions (2009-2013), the first British Director to hold a position on the WOCCU Board, a Director of Stepchange Scotland, The Debt Charity. Marlene was the first lay Member of Counsel of the Chartered Banker Institute, and a Board member and Vice President of ABCUL (2008‑2010). She is a Founder of the Development Education Europe Programme (DEEU), a training programme for credit union leaders and still holds a position on the Advisory Board. She also played a key role in the formation of the African Development Education Programme. In 2019 she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the USA National Credit Union Foundation for services to the international DE community.
Marlene was appointed Chair of the FCA Smaller Business Practitioner Panel from 1 October 2019 and represents the interests of small firms as an ex-officio member of the FCA Practitioner Panel.
